Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 23.30

cirasya cakṣuṃ udapāsi loke cirasya utpādo tathāgatānāṃ |
cirasya mahyaṃ praṇidhiḥ samṛddhā buddho bhaviṣyāmi na me 'tra saṃśayaḥ || 30 ||

It has taken a long time for the All-seeing One to appear in the world. It takes a long time for Tathagatas to be born. After a longtime, too, my vow will be fulfilled, and I shall become a Buddha. Of this I have no doubt. (30)
