by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 21.33

अथ दिशा विलोकेन्तो पश्यति वदतां वरो ।
देवकोटिसहस्राणि तस्मात् हासं प्रमुंचति ॥ ३३ ॥

atha diśā vilokento paśyati vadatāṃ varo |
devakoṭisahasrāṇi tasmāt hāsaṃ pramuṃcati || 33 ||

Then the Prince of Speakers, surveying the regions, espies thousands of kotis of devas, and that is why he laughs. (33)
