by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 20.62

मुंचथ अमरा पुराणि न किल प्रामोद्यस्य अयं कालः ।
जरामरणपुरं भेत्तुं कालो ज्ञानप्रहारेण ॥ ६२ ॥

muṃcatha amarā purāṇi na kila prāmodyasya ayaṃ kālaḥ |
jarāmaraṇapuraṃ bhettuṃ kālo jñānaprahāreṇa || 62 ||

“Leave your cities, ye immortals. Verily this is not the time to indulge in their delights. Rather is it time to rive the strongholds of old age and death with the blows of knowledge.” (62)
