Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 20.9

भगवां च नाम कामानां दोषां सततं भाषति ।
अथ च लोकनाथस्य माता कामां निषेवति ॥ ९ ॥

bhagavāṃ ca nāma kāmānāṃ doṣāṃ satataṃ bhāṣati |
atha ca lokanāthasya mātā kāmāṃ niṣevati || 9 ||

The Exalted One, indeed, at all times, proclaims the depravity of sensual desires. Shall, then, the mother of the saviour of the world indulge in love? (9)
