by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 19.139

अस्थानम् एव जिनपुत्र यदा स्थूलाहि भूमिहि ।
तत् पुरे अधिगच्छेयुः सर्वज्ञत्वं तथागताः ॥ १३९ ॥

asthānam eva jinaputra yadā sthūlāhi bhūmihi |
tat pure adhigaccheyuḥ sarvajñatvaṃ tathāgatāḥ || 139 ||

It is impossible, O son of the Conqueror, that the Tathagatas should attain omniscience before this, when they are still in the low bhumis. (139)
