This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 19.8

यदि मह्यं पिता ब्रुयात् प्रत्यक्षं मम अग्रतः ।
स्वयम् उपगम्य एवन् तच् छ्रद्दधे तदा तथा ॥ ८ ॥

yadi mahyaṃ pitā bruyāt pratyakṣaṃ mama agrataḥ |
svayam upagamya evan tac chraddadhe tadā tathā || 8 ||

“If,” said he, “my own dead father would appear of his own accord before my eyes and speak to me, then and only then should I believe in this other world. (8)
