Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.74

न च सा अपशब्दवती शब्दभ्रष्टा अशेषं अनुयुक्तशब्दा ।
शब्देषु कुशलाकुशलां सर्वां जनतां प्रहर्षयति ॥ ७४ ॥

na ca sā apaśabdavatī śabdabhraṣṭā aśeṣaṃ anuyuktaśabdā |
śabdeṣu kuśalākuśalāṃ sarvāṃ janatāṃ praharṣayati || 74 ||

It is not vulgar nor corrupted, but consists of wholly ordered sounds. It thrills all men, good and bad, with its accents. (74)
