Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.63

जीमूतरसितमधुरा परभृतरथनेमितुल्यनिर्घोषा ।
सागरनर्दितसारसप्रभावा वरबुद्धिनो वाचा ॥ ६३ ॥

jīmūtarasitamadhurā parabhṛtarathanemitulyanirghoṣā |
sāgaranarditasārasaprabhāvā varabuddhino vācā || 63 ||

The voice of the eminently wise one is like the roar of the thunder-cloud, yet sweet, like the cuckoo’s call. It is like the rattle of chariot-wheels, like the booming of the ocean, like the cry of a water-bird. (63)
