Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.60

असन्मन्त्रा विभाषित्वा अस्मिं लोके सदेवके ।
पुनः पर्येषन्ति तीर्थे एषा लोकानुवर्तना ॥ ६० ॥

asanmantrā vibhāṣitvā asmiṃ loke sadevake |
punaḥ paryeṣanti tīrthe eṣā lokānuvartanā || 60 ||

Although in the worlds both of devas and of men they condemn upholders of wrong beliefs, they yet resort to heretics. This is mere conformity with the world. (60)
