Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.50

प्रभूश् च कर्म वारयितुं कर्मं दर्शयन्ति च जिना ।
ऐश्वर्यं विनिगूहन्ति एषा लोकानुवर्तना ॥ ५० ॥

prabhūś ca karma vārayituṃ karmaṃ darśayanti ca jinā |
aiśvaryaṃ vinigūhanti eṣā lokānuvartanā || 50 ||

Although they could suppress the working of karma, the Conquerors let it become manifest and conceal their sovereign power. This is mere conformity with the world. (50)
