Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.44

पादां च नाम धोवन्ति न चैषां सज्जते रजः ।
पादाः कमलपत्राभा एषा लोकानुवर्तना ॥ ४४ ॥

pādāṃ ca nāma dhovanti na caiṣāṃ sajjate rajaḥ |
pādāḥ kamalapatrābhā eṣā lokānuvartanā || 44 ||

It is true that they wash their feet, but no dust ever adheres to them; their feet remain clean as lotus-leaves. This washing is mere conformity with the world. (44)
