Mahavastu [sanskrit]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.42

लोकानुवर्तनां बुद्धा अनुवर्तन्ति लौकिकीं ।
प्रज्ञप्तिम् अनुवर्तन्ति यथा लोकोत्तराम् अपि ॥ ४२ ॥

lokānuvartanāṃ buddhā anuvartanti laukikīṃ |
prajñaptim anuvartanti yathā lokottarām api || 42 ||

The Buddhas conform to the world’s conditions, but in such a way that they also conform to the traits of transcendentalism. (42)
