by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 13.39

आयुःसंस्कारं उत्सृजन्तानां पूर्वा कोटी न प्रज्ञायते ।
निर्वायन्तानां वीराणां पूर्वा कोटी न प्रज्ञायते ॥ ३९ ॥

āyuḥsaṃskāraṃ utsṛjantānāṃ pūrvā koṭī na prajñāyate |
nirvāyantānāṃ vīrāṇāṃ pūrvā koṭī na prajñāyate || 39 ||

Nor the number of those who shed the elements of sentient life, nor of those heroes who pass entirely away. (39)
