Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 13.27

यथा संसारचक्रस्य पूर्वा कोटी न प्रज्ञायते ।
तथाइव लोकधातूनां पूर्वा कोटी न प्रज्ञायते ॥ २७ ॥

yathā saṃsāracakrasya pūrvā koṭī na prajñāyate |
tathāiva lokadhātūnāṃ pūrvā koṭī na prajñāyate || 27 ||

As the beginning of the round of rebirth (samsara) is not known, so neither is that of the universes. (27)
