by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 12.65

राजा तद चक्रवर्ति अभूषि चातुर्द्वीपो महिस्थामो ।
नामेन मणिविषाणो शासति धर्मेण यो जनतां ॥ ६५ ॥

Now there was at that time a universal king, lord of the four continents, holding sway over all the earth. He was named Manivishana, and he governed men in righteousness. (65)
