Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 12.61

बहुजनमहितो स्वयंभु अनन्यनेयो भवेय सर्वज्ञो ।
कुशलेन हि मे तेन तथागतबलो विभू भोमि ॥ ६१ ॥

bahujanamahito svayaṃbhu ananyaneyo bhaveya sarvajño |
kuśalena hi me tena tathāgatabalo vibhū bhomi || 61 ||

“May I become honoured by the multitude, self-dependent, not led by another; may I become omniscient. By this deed of merit of mine, may I become mighty with a Tathagata’s strength.” (61)
