Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 11.23

अतः प्रभृति तिर्थिका वा भवन्ति भवसूदनाः ।
अतः प्रभृति कुच्छन्ति कामां शंसन्ति निर्वृतिं ॥ २३ ॥

ataḥ prabhṛti tirthikā vā bhavanti bhavasūdanāḥ |
ataḥ prabhṛti kucchanti kāmāṃ śaṃsanti nirvṛtiṃ || 23 ||

Henceforth, as ascetic pilgrims, they become destroyers of existence; they abhor the pleasures of sense and extol release. (23)
