by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 10.19

न जातु तृणकाष्ठेहि ज्वलनः शाम्यते ज्वलन् ।
न जातु उपभोगेभ्यः तृष्णा कामेषु शाम्यति ॥ १९ ॥

na jātu tṛṇakāṣṭhehi jvalanaḥ śāmyate jvalan |
na jātu upabhogebhyaḥ tṛṣṇā kāmeṣu śāmyati || 19 ||

“As the fire that burns when grass and wood are set alight never stops burning, so craving is never assuaged by indulgence in sensual pleasures.” (19)
