Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 10.3

सुखेन्ति सर्वसत्वानां संस्थितानि नरेश्वराः ।
तं च न आत्मसुखार्थाय न अपि बोधेः कथंचन ॥ ३ ॥

sukhenti sarvasatvānāṃ saṃsthitāni nareśvarāḥ |
taṃ ca na ātmasukhārthāya na api bodheḥ kathaṃcana || 3 ||

These lords of men render happy the condition of all creatures; but they do this in no wise for the sake of their own well-being, nor for the sake of enlightenment. (3)
