by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 9.21

मूर्छितास् ते न भुंजन्ति परान्नान्य् अवस्रुता ।
स्वभावाध्याशयस् तेषाम् एवम् आर्य प्रशंस्यते ति ॥ २१ ॥

mūrchitās te na bhuṃjanti parānnāny avasrutā |
svabhāvādhyāśayas teṣām evam ārya praśaṃsyate ti || 21 ||

Though they faint, they do not, saturated with lust, eat the food of others. Thus, noble sir, is their disposition extolled as independent. (21)
