Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 9.14

यं नान्यः प्रणिधिः कश्चित् एवं सत्वस्योपजायते ।
सर्वसत्वसुखार्थाय तद् असाधारणं विदुर् इति ॥ १४ ॥

yaṃ nānyaḥ praṇidhiḥ kaścit evaṃ satvasyopajāyate |
sarvasatvasukhārthāya tad asādhāraṇaṃ vidur iti || 14 ||

When a man conceives no other resolve but that of benefiting all creatures, people regard this as no common thing. (14)
