Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.50

तेन स्कन्धा तडिबुद्बुदोपमा फेनपिण्डकम् इव प्रभास्वरं ।
देशिता दशबलेन जानता यस्य्ऽ इयं गुणकथा प्रवर्तते ॥ ५० ॥

tena skandhā taḍibudbudopamā phenapiṇḍakam iva prabhāsvaraṃ |
deśitā daśabalena jānatā yasy' iyaṃ guṇakathā pravartate || 50 ||

“He whose virtues are sung here, the knowing Dashabala, has shown that the skandhas are but as a lightning’s flash, as a bubble of air, or as the snow-white foam on the crest of a wave. (50)
