by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.40

किन् तु भोः धुतधरा समकंपि मेदिनी ससरिता ससमुद्रा ।
देवदुन्दुभिरवाश् च मनोज्ञा दिव्यमाल्यविकिरणं च भवन्ति ॥ ४० ॥

kin tu bhoḥ dhutadharā samakaṃpi medinī sasaritā sasamudrā |
devadundubhiravāś ca manojñā divyamālyavikiraṇaṃ ca bhavanti || 40 ||

“Why, pious friend, does the earth with its oceans and its streams tremble? Why do celestial drums joyfully resound? And why are celestial garlands strewn around?” (40)
