Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.31

तीर्थिका च बहिधानुगताश् च क्रेयुर् अप्रतिमशासनदोषं ।
धूमकालिकम् इति श्रमणस्य एतत् एव च तु रक्षणीयं नो ॥ ३१ ॥

tīrthikā ca bahidhānugatāś ca kreyur apratimaśāsanadoṣaṃ |
dhūmakālikam iti śramaṇasya etat eva ca tu rakṣaṇīyaṃ no || 31 ||

“For, if you did, sectarians and heretics would arise and do harm to the peerless doctrine. This is the occasion of the Shramana’s cremation, and that is all we are concerned with. (31)
