This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.24

तेन्ऽ इमौ क्रमवरौ महामुनेः रोदनेन जनताभिपीडितौ ।
नो विभान्ति मुनिनो यथा पुरा एवम् एतद् अनुपश्य सुव्रत ॥ २४ ॥

ten' imau kramavarau mahāmuneḥ rodanena janatābhipīḍitau |
no vibhānti munino yathā purā evam etad anupaśya suvrata || 24 ||

“Soiled, therefore, by weeping men the great sage’s feet do not now gleam as they used to do. Understand the matter so, my devout friend.” (24)
