Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 7.17

दृश्य तं प्रवररूपधारिणं काष्ठसंचयगतं तथागतं ।
धिग् भवान् इति गिराम् उदीरयी दर्शितप्रकृतिभावलक्षणां ॥ १७ ॥

dṛśya taṃ pravararūpadhāriṇaṃ kāṣṭhasaṃcayagataṃ tathāgataṃ |
dhig bhavān iti girām udīrayī darśitaprakṛtibhāvalakṣaṇāṃ || 17 ||

When he saw the Tathagata in all his superb beauty laid out on a funeral-pile, he exclaimed, “Fie on existence that always bears the manifest marks of its true nature.” (17)
