Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.62

येषां च पापकं कर्म अविपक्वं पुरा कृतं ।
न ते लभन्ति निर्गन्तुं निरयात् कर्मप्रत्यया ॥ ६२ ॥

yeṣāṃ ca pāpakaṃ karma avipakvaṃ purā kṛtaṃ |
na te labhanti nirgantuṃ nirayāt karmapratyayā || 62 ||

But as their sinful karma has not borne all its fruit, through the effect of this karma they do not win a way out of hell. (62)
