by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.46

यदा च अग्निर् निर्वाति अथ तूष्णीभवन्ति ते ।
पुनर् अग्निस्मिं प्रज्वलिते निर्नादन्ति महत्स्वरं ॥ ४६ ॥

yadā ca agnir nirvāti atha tūṣṇībhavanti te |
punar agnismiṃ prajvalite nirnādanti mahatsvaraṃ || 46 ||

When the fire is put out they become silent. When it flames up again, they resume their loud cries. (46)
