Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.37

भैरवे अन्धकारस्मिं वार्ता यत्र न दृश्यति ।
धूमसंघातस्मिं तस्मिं नरके ओसरन्ति च ॥ ३७ ॥

bhairave andhakārasmiṃ vārtā yatra na dṛśyati |
dhūmasaṃghātasmiṃ tasmiṃ narake osaranti ca || 37 ||

After this they fling them into the smoking hell of terrible darkling Samghata, where no unscathed men are seen. (37)
