Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 2.27

तेन ताम् अवगाहन्ति तप्तां क्षारोदकां नदीं ।
तेषां च अङ्गमङ्गानि क्षतानि प्रतिविध्यत ॥ २७ ॥

tena tām avagāhanti taptāṃ kṣārodakāṃ nadīṃ |
teṣāṃ ca aṅgamaṅgāni kṣatāni pratividhyata || 27 ||

There they dive into the river’s hot and caustic water, which pierces all of their tortured limbs. (27)
