The Lotus Sutra (Saddharma-pundarika) is an important Mahayana Buddhist scripture classified as one of the nine Dharmas. the Lotus Sutra deals with a wide range of important Buddhist teachings in twenty-seven chapters including the nature of the Buddhas and the inherent potentiality of becoming Buddha within all beings. This editions only contains the Sanskrit metrical text and the corresponding English translation. Alternative titles: Saddharma-puṇḍarīka-sūtra (सद्धर्म-पुण्डरीक-सूत्र).

महर्द्धिकाः पञ्च मि श्रावका ये निर्दिष्ट ये ते मय अग्रबोधये ।
अनागते ऽध्वानि जिनाः स्वयंभुवस्तेषां च चर्यां शृणुथा ममान्तिकात् ॥ ३९ ॥

maharddhikāḥ pañca mi śrāvakā ye nirdiṣṭa ye te maya agrabodhaye |
anāgate 'dhvāni jināḥ svayaṃbhuvasteṣāṃ ca caryāṃ śṛṇuthā mamāntikāt || 39 ||

These are my five mighty disciples whom I have destined to supreme enlightenment and to become in future self-born Ginas; now hear from me their course. [In this chapter only four disciples are mentioned; the fifth must be Sariputra, whose destination has been predicted before].
