The Sanskrit edition of the ### (lit. “the sutra of the lotus of compassion”) is an ancient Mahayana scripture devoted to Buddha Padmottara, possibly dated to as early as the 3rd century A.D. The Karunapundarika-sutra praises Shakyamuni’s compassionate activities in the Kaliyuga (the degenerate period). Alternative titles: Karuṇāpuṇḍarīkasūtra (करुणापुण्डरीकसूत्र), Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka sūtra (करुणापुण्डरीक सूत्र, Karunapundarika-sutra).

vajracchedaprajñāvabhāso bodhisattvo'pyevamāha -
"yathākāśaṃ suvistīrṇam evaṃ tvaṃ karuṇāśrayaḥ /
tvayā sattvebhyo'yaṃ panthā bodhicaryā pradarśitaḥ" //
vegavairocano bodhisattva āha -
"na cānye kṛpā sattveṣu sthāpayitvā tathāgataṃ /
yastvaṃ sarvaguṇopeto varaprajñāvicakṣaṇaḥ" //
"yathākāśaṃ suvistīrṇam evaṃ tvaṃ karuṇāśrayaḥ /
