The Sanskrit edition of the ### (lit. “the sutra of the lotus of compassion”) is an ancient Mahayana scripture devoted to Buddha Padmottara, possibly dated to as early as the 3rd century A.D. The Karunapundarika-sutra praises Shakyamuni’s compassionate activities in the Kaliyuga (the degenerate period). Alternative titles: Karuṇāpuṇḍarīkasūtra (करुणापुण्डरीकसूत्र), Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka sūtra (करुणापुण्डरीक सूत्र, Karunapundarika-sutra).

atha khalu kulaputra samudrareṇurbrāhmaṇaścaturthaṃ vimalavaiśāyanaṃ māṇavakaṃ saṃcodayāṃ āsa / atha khalu kulaputra vimalavaiśāyano māṇavako ratnagarbhasya tathāgatasya purataḥ sthitvāha - "evamevāhamasmin bhadrake kalpe bodhimākāṅkṣāmi, na ca kevalamevaṃrūpaṃ kaliyuge / yathā kāśyapasya tathāgatasya parinirvṛtasya daśavarṣasahasrikāyāṃ prajāyāṃ dānadamaparikṣīṇāśayānāṃ sattvānāṃ saptadhanavirahitānāṃ akalyāṇamitre śāstṛsaṃjñāpratipannacittā bhavanti, anarthikāstribhiḥ puṇyakriyāvastubhirbhavanti, virahitāstribhiḥ sucaritairudyuktāstriṣu duṣcariteṣu kleśāndhakāravyākulacittā bhavanti, anarthikāstribhiryānairna śakyaṃ tatkālaṃ kenacidbodhicaryāṃ niṣpādayituṃ / kiṃ punarvarṣasahasrikāyāṃ; yāvatte (KpSū 201) sattvā varṣaśatāyuṣkā bhavanti, tatkālaṃ sattvānāṃ kuśalamūlasya nāsti nāma, kiṃ punaḥ kuśalamūlacaryā; tāvat pañcakaṣāye loke hāyamānā daśavarṣāyuṣkā bhavanti, śastrāntarakalpe pratyupasthite tatkālamahaṃ devebhyo'vatīrya sattvān paritrāyeyaṃ, akuśalaṃ riñcitvā kuśale niyojayeyaṃ, yāvaddaśasu kuśaleṣu karmapatheṣu sattvān pratiṣṭhāpayeyaṃ, kleśāṃśca sattvānāṃ kuśalebhiḥ karmapathebhiḥ pariśodhayeyaṃ, pañcakaṣāyaṃ ca parihāyeyaṃ / yāvadaśītivarṣasahasrikāyāṃ prajāyāṃ ahamanuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ, mandarāgadveṣamohānāṃ avidyerṣyāmatsariṇāṃ sattvānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayeyaṃ, triṣu ca yāneṣu saṃniyojayeyaṃ / yadi me bhagavannevaṃrūpā āśā paripūryeta vyākarotu māṃ bhadanta bhagavannanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau / yadāhaṃ bhadanta bhagavannevaṃrūpaṃ vyākaraṇaṃ na lapsyāmi, na śrāvakabhūmiṃ prārthayāmi na ca pratyekabuddhabhūmiṃ yena yānena śīghraṃ saṃsārādvimucyāmi" /
