buddho bhagavānsatkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrairdhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhairdevairnāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍaiḥ kinnarairmahoragairiti devanāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṅghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme|| yadā bhagavatā stavakarṇikanimantritena saupārake nagare mahājanavineyākarṣaṇaṃ kṛtaṃ tadā sarvaḥ saupārakanivāsī janakāyo buddhanimno dharmapravaṇaḥ saṅghaprāgbhāro vyavasthitaḥ| saupārake nagare 'nyatamo gṛhapatirāḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī| tena sadṛśātkulātkalatramānītam| sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā| sāṣṭānāṃ navānāṃ māsānāmatyayātprasūtā| dārako jātaḥ| jātamātrasya sarvaśarīraṃ piṭakaiḥ sphuṭaṃ saṃvṛttam| yadā te piṭakāḥ sphuṭitāstadā ekaghano māṃsapiṇḍaḥ saṃsthitaḥ pūyaśoṇitaṃ cāsya śarīrātpragharanmahaddaurgandhaṃ janayati|| tato 'sya pitā aiśvaryabalādhānena dravyamanttrauṣadhiparicārakasametaḥ svayamevābdhaścikitsāṃ kartuṃ na cāsau vyādhirupaśamaṃ gacchati karmabalādhānaprāptatvāt| sa svaśarīraṃ tathā vikṣatamapatrāpya parigṛhītaṃ vastrairgopāyati| tasya guptika iti nāma kṛtam|| yāvadguptiko dārako mahānsaṃvṛttastasya vayasyakāḥ sahajātakāḥ śrāvastyāḥ saupārakanagaramanuprāptāḥ| tatastaiḥ piturasya kathyate| tāta yadyeṣa śrāvastīṃ nīyate śakyetāsmādyādheḥ parimocayituṃ yasmāttatra satti vaidyabhaiṣajādayaḥ sulabhā iti||

tataḥ pitrā tadvacanamupaśrutya prabhūtāni ratnāni paricārakāṃśca dattvā śrāvastīmanupreṣitaḥ| so 'nupūrveṇa vayasyakasahāyaḥ śrāvastīmanuprāptaḥ| tatrāpyasya karmajo vyādhiḥ satyapi vaidyadravyauṣadhiparicārakabāhulye na śakyate cikitsitum|| yāvadasāvapareṇa samayena jetavanaṃ nirgataḥ| athāsau dadarśa buddhaṃ bhagavattaṃ dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṅkṛtamaśītyā cānuvyañjanairvirājitagātraṃ vyāmaprabhālaṅkṛtaṃ sūryasahasrātirekaprabhaṃ jaṅgamamiva ratnaparvataṃ samattato bhadrakaṃ sahadarśanāccānena bhagavato 'ttike cittaṃ prasāditam| prasādajāto bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya| tasmai bhagavatāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā pañcopādānaskandhā rogato gaṇḍataḥ śalyato 'dhato 'nityato duḥkhataḥ śūnyato 'nātmataśca deśitāḥ| sa saṃskārānityatāṃ viditvā bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ| tena yujyamānena ghaṭamānena vyāyacchamānenedameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śatanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhansaṃvṛttastraidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhasatkāraparāṅmukhaḥ sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo 'bhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ| te 'pyasya sahajātakāstenaiva saṃvegena pravrajitāḥ||

te yenāyuṣmānguptikastenopasaṃkrāttāḥ| upasaṃkramyāyuṣmattaṃ guptikamidamavocan| kimāyuṣmanguptika pralopadharma kiṃ atra loke 'pralopadharma|| māyuṣmattaḥ pralopadharma tasya nirodhānnirvāṇamapralopadharma| vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā vijñānamāyuṣmattaḥ pralopadharma tasya nirodhānnirvāṇamapralopadharma| kiṃ manyadhve āyuṣmattaḥ| nūpaṃ nityaṃ anityaṃ || anityamidamāyuṣmanguptika|| yatpunaranityaṃ duḥkhaṃ tanna duḥkham|| duḥkhamidamāyuṣmanguptika|| yatpunaranityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vipariṇāmadharma satyamapi tacchrutavānāryaśrāvaka ātmata upagacchedetanmama eṣo 'hamasmi eṣa me ātmetyevametat|| no āyuṣmanguptika|| kiṃ manyadhve āyuṣmattaḥ| vedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā vijñānaṃ nityaṃ anityaṃ || anityamidamāyuṣmanguptika|| yatpunaranityaṃ duḥkham|| duḥkhamidamāyuṣmanguptika|| yatpunaranityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vipariṇāmadharma api tacchrutavānāryaśrāvaka ātmata upagacchedetanmama eṣo 'hamasmyeṣa me ātmeti| no āyuṣmanguptika|| tasmāttarhyāyuṣmatto yatkiñcidrūpamatītānāgatapratyutpannamādhyātmikaṃ bāhyaṃ audārikaṃ sūkṣmaṃ hīnaṃ praṇītaṃ yadvā dūre yadvāttike tatsarvaṃ naitanmama naiṣo 'hamasmi naiṣa me ātmetyevametadyathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam|| kācidvedanā saṃjñā saṃskārā yatkiñcidvijñānamatītānāgatapratyutpannamādhyātmikaṃ bāhyaṃ audārikaṃ sūkṣmaṃ hīnaṃ praṇītaṃ yadvā dūre yadvāttike tatsarvaṃ naitanmama naiṣo 'hamasmi naiṣa me ātmetyevametadyathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam| evaṃdarśī āyuṣmattaḥ śrutavānāryaśrāvako nūpādapi nirvidyate vedanāyāḥ saṃjñāyāḥ saṃskārebhyo vijñānādapi nirviṇo virajyate virakto vimucyate| vimuktamevaṃ jñānadarśanaṃ bhavati kṣīṇā me jātiruṣitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ kṛtaṃ karaṇīyaṃ nāparasmādbhavaṃ prajānāmīti||

asminkhalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe teṣāṃ sahajātakānāṃ virajo vigatamalaṃ dharmeṣu dharmacakṣurutpannam|| bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavattaṃ papracchuḥ| kāni bhadatta guptikena karmāṇi kṛtāni yenāsya śarīramevaṃ bībhatsavyādhibahulaṃ durgandhaṃ saṃvṛttaṃ kiṃ karma kṛtaṃ yena tīkṣṇaniśitabuddhiḥ saṃvṛttaḥ pravrajya cārhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtamiti|| bhagavānāha| guptikenaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvamanyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyaṃbhāvīni| guptikena karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni ko 'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati| na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyatte nābdhātau na tajodhotau na vāyudhātāvapi tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyatte śubhānyaśubhāni ca|

na praṇaśyatti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi|
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalatti khalu dehinām||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo 'tīte 'dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāmanyatamaḥ śreṣṭhī| sa dvitīyaśreṣṭhinā sārdhaṃ viruddhaḥ|| tatastena rājā prabhūtaṃ dhanaṃ dattvā vijñāpitaḥ| deva ayaṃ śreṣṭhī parādhikaḥ kriyatāmasya daṇḍanigraha iti|| tatojñā tasyaivānujñātaḥ| tenāsau svagṛhamānīya latābhistāḍitaḥ| tato rudhirāvasiktaśarīrasya prabhūtaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ ca viṣacūrṇaṃ dattvoptaṃ yenāsya taccharīramekadhanaṃ māṃsapiṇḍavadavasthitam|| tatastasya śreṣṭhino vayasyakaiḥ śrutaṃ yathā tenaivaṃvidhaṃ karma kṛtamiti| tatastaiḥ sametairbhūtvā * * yairupakaraṇaviśeṣaistasmādyādheḥ parimocitaḥ|| tato 'sau tenaiva ca saṃvegena gṛhānniṣkramya pravrajitaḥ| tenācāryakeṇa saptatriṃśadbodhipakṣyāndharmānbhāvayitvā pratyekā bodhiḥ sākṣātkṛtā|| tato 'sya cittamutpannaṃ bahvanena śreṣṭhinā matsaṃtāpādapuṇyaṃ prasūtam yannvahamenaṃ gatvā saṃvejayeyamiti|| tatastasyāgrato gatvā upari vihāyasamabhyudgamya vicitrāṇi pratihāryāṇi vidarśayitumārabdhaḥ| āśu pṛthagjanānāmṛddhirāvarjanakarī| sa mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ pādayornipatya kṛtakarapuṭo bhagavattaṃ vijñāpayati| avatarāvatara mahādakṣiṇīya kṛtāparādho 'haṃ tavāttike tvāmeva niśritya punaḥ pratyupasthāsyāmīti| tenāsau pratyekabuddhaḥ kṣamāpayitvā piṇḍakena pratipādya paṭenācchāditaḥ | yanmayā krodhābhibhūtena tavāparādhaḥ kṛtaḥ asya karmaṇo vipākaṃ pratyanubhaveyam| yanmayā satkāraḥ kṛto 'nenaivaṃvidhānāṃ guṇānāṃ lābhī syāṃ prativiśiṣṭataraṃ cātaḥ śāstāramārāgayeyamiti||

bhagavānāha| kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo 'sau tena kālena tena samayena śreṣṭhī āsīdayaṃ sa guptikaḥ| tasya karmaṇaḥ prabhāvātpañca janmaśatāni kaśābhistāḍyamānaḥ kālaṃ kṛtavān| tenaiva hetunā ayamevaṃvidha āśraya āsāditaḥ| bhūyaḥ kāśyape bhagavati sahajātakairvayasyakaissārdhaṃ pravrajita āsīt| tatraibhirbrahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitaḥ| tenedānīmarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| iti hi bhikṣava ekāttakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāttakṛṣṇo vipāka ekāttaśuklānāmekāttaśuklo vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśrastasmāttarhi bhikṣava ekāttakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi caikāttaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīya ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam||
