buddho bhagavānsatkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrairdhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhairdevairnāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍaiḥ kinnarairmahoragairiti devanāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṅghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme| tena khalu samayena rājā prasenajitkauśalo rājā ca brahmadatta ubhāvapyetau parasparaviruddhau|| yāvadrājā prasenajitkauśalaḥ svaviṣayaparyattaṃ gatvā kāṣṭhavāṭaṃ baddhvāvasthito rājā brahmadattaśca turaṅgabalakāyaṃ saṃnāhya hastikāyamaśvakāyaṃ rathakāyaṃ pattikāyaṃ nadyāḥ kūle kāṣṭhavāṭaṃ baddhvāvasthitaḥ|| yāvadrājñā prasenajitkauśalena tatraivāgramahīṣī nītā| sa tayā sārdha krīḍati ramate paricārayati| brahmadatto 'pi devyā saha krīḍati ramate paricārayati| yenaikadivasa eva rājñaḥ prasenajitkauśalasya duhitā jātā brahmadattasya putraḥ|| yāvadubhayorapi rājñoḥ skandhāvāre* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * pravartate yenāyamevaṃvidha utsava iti| tairākhyātaṃ rājño brahmadattasya putro jāta iti| brahmadattenāpi tathaiva pṛṣṭam| kathayatti rājñaḥ prasenajito duhitā jāteti|| tato rājñāṃ brahmadattena rājñaḥ prasenajito dūtasaṃpreṣaṇaṃ kṛtam| śrutaṃ mayā yathā tava duhitā jāteti diṣṭyā vardhase asmākamapi putro jātaḥ kiṃ tu dīyatāmeṣā dārikā mama putrāya evaṃ kṛte sāṃbandhike yāvajjīvaṃ vairotsargaḥ kṛto bhaviṣyatīti| rājñā prasenajitā pratijñātamevaṃ bhavatviti|| tatastābhyāṃ parasparaṃ prītau kṛtāyāṃ kṣeme jāte rājñā brahmadattena dārakasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitaṃ kṣemaṃkara iti rājñā prasenajitā kauśalena dārikāyā jātāyā jātimahaṃ kṛtvā kṣemeti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| tāvubhāvapyunnītau vardhitau| yāvatkrameṇa mahāttau ||

atha sa dārako dārikāyā hārārdhahāramālāṃvadhnan kaṇṭhemaṇīnpreṣayati yadāsau dārikā mahatī saṃvṛttā| tayā te pṛṣṭāḥ kuta etāni prābhṛtānyāgacchatti| preṣyairvistareṇa sa vṛttātta āveditaḥ| śrutvā ca pitaraṃ vijñāpayāmāsa| tāta nāhaṃ kāmairarthinī bhagavacchāsane pravrajiṣyāmi anujānīhi māṃ tāteti|| rājā kathayati| naitaddārike śakyaṃ mayā kartuṃ yasmāttava janmani mama kṣemaṃ jātamiti|| tato rājñā prasenajitā kauśalena rājño brahmadattasya dūtasaṃpreṣaṇaṃ kṛtam| eṣā me dārikā pravrajitumicchati āgatyaināṃ gṛhāṇeti| yāvadrājñā brahmadattena divasaḥ pratigṛhītaḥ saptame 'hani āgacchāmīti yatte kṛtyaṃ karaṇīyaṃ tatkuruṣveti|| eṣa vṛttāttaḥ kṣemayā dārikayā śrutaḥ saptame divase vivāho bhaviṣyatīti| tataḥ kṣemā bhītā trastā saṃvigrā āhṛṣṭaromakūpā śaraṇapṛṣṭhamabhiruhya jetavanābhimukhī buddhaṃ bhagavattamāyācituṃ pravṛttā| āha ca|


kṛpakaruṇavihāro dhyāyamāno maharṣiḥ
praśamadamavidhijñaḥ pāpahaḥ śāttacittaḥ|
mama vidhivadapāyānmocaya tvaṃ hi nāthaḥ
śaraṇamupagatāhaṃ lokanāthaṃ hyanāthā||

atrāttare nāsti kiñcidbuddhānāṃ bhagavatāmajñātamadṛṣṭamaviditamavijñātam| dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ lokānugrahapravṛttānāmekārakṣāṇāmekavīrāṇāmadvitīyānāmadvayavādināṃ śamathavipaśyanāvihāriṇāṃ tridamathavastukuśalānāṃ caturodhottīrṇānāṃ caturṛddhipādacaraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ pañcāṅgaviprahīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāttānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāṃ saptabodhyaṅgakusumādyānāmaṣṭāṅgamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvasamāpattikuśalānāṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśaśatavaśavartiviśiṣṭānāṃ trīrātrestrirdivasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate| ko hīyate ko vardhate kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ ko 'pāyanimnaḥ ko 'pāyapravaṇaḥ ko 'pāyaprāgbhāraḥ kamahamapāyāduddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyaṃ kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamūlānyavaropayeyaṃ kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyaṃ kasya paripakkāni vimocayeyam| āha ca|

apyevātikramedvelāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ|
na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velāmatikramet||

atha bhagavānkṣemāyā vinayakālamavekṣya ṛdyā upasaṃkrāttaḥ| upasaṃkramya tādṛśī caturāryasatyasaṃprativedhikī dharmadeśanā kṛtā yāṃ śrutvā kṣemayā anāgāmiphalaṃ prāptamabhijñānirhāraśca| atha kṣemā atikrāttakāmadhātau labdhapratiṣṭhā* * * *||

yāvatsaptame divase vivāhakāle saṃprāpte pratyupasthite rājakumāre anekajanaśatasahāye vedīmadhyagatāyāṃ brāhmaṇena purohitena lājā ghṛtasarpiṣānupradattāḥ| tato dārakadārikāhastasaṃśleṣaṇe kriyamāṇe kṣemā paśyatāmanekeṣāṃ prāṇiśatasahasrāṇāṃ vitatapakṣa iva haṃsarājo gaganatalamabhiruhya vicitrāṇi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayitumārabdhā|| tato rājā prasenajitkauśalo rājā ca brahmadattaḥ kṣemaṅkaraśca rājakumāro 'nye ca kutūhalābhyāgatāḥ sattvā vismayamupagatāḥ pādayornipatya vijñāpayitumārabdhāḥ| marṣaya bhagini ya ete tvayā dharmāḥ sākṣātkṛtā asthānametadyattvaṃ kāmānparibhuñjīthā iti|| atha kṣemā gaganatalādavatīrya janakāyasya puraḥ sthitvā tathāvidhāṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavatī yāṃ śrutvānekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasraissatyadarśanaṃ kṛtam|| tataḥ kṣemā dārikā pitaramanujñāpya bhagavatsakāśamupasaṃkrāttā bhagavatā ca mahāprajāpatyāḥ saṃnyastā| tatastayā pravrājitā upasaṃpāditā ca| tayā yujyamānayā ghaṭamānayā vyāyacchamānayā idameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śatanapatanavikaraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| arhattī saṃvṛttā traidhātukavītarāgā samaloṣṭakāñcanākāśapāṇitalasamacittā vāsīcandanakalpā vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośā vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāptā bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅmukhā sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyā mānyābhivādyā ca saṃvṛttā| tatra bhagavānbhikṣūnāmantrayate sma| eṣā 'grā me bhikṣavo bhikṣuṇīnāṃ mama śrāvikāṇāṃ mahāprājñānāṃ mahāpratibhānāṃ yaduta kṣemā bhikṣuṇī||

bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavattaṃ papracchuḥ| kāni bhadatta kṣemayā karmāṇi kṛtāni yena mahāprājñānāṃ mahāpratibhānāmagrā nirdiṣṭā|| bhagavānāha| kṣemayaiva bhikṣavaḥ pūrvamanyāsu jātiṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃbhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyodhavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyaṃbhāvīni| kṣemayā karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni ko 'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati| na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni bāhye pṛthivīdhātau vipacyatte nābdhātau na tejodhātau na vāyudhātāvapi tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtāni vipacyatte śubhānyaśubhāni ca|


na praṇaśyatti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi|
sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalatti khalu dehinām||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo 'tīte 'dhvanyasminneva bhadrake kalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān| sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīmupaniśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve| yāvattatrānyatarā śreṣṭhiduhitā bhagavataḥ kāśyapasya śāsane pravrajitā| tayā bhagavataḥ kāśyapasya śāsane dānapradānāni dattāni dvādaśa varṣasahasrāṇi ca brahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālito na ca kaścidguṇagaṇo 'dhigato yasyāstūpādhyāyikāyāḥ sakāśe pravrajitā āsītsā bhagavatā kāśyapena prajñāvatī nirdiṣṭā| tatastayā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam| yathaiṣā upādhyāyikā prajñāvatīnāmagrā nirdiṣṭā evamahamapyanāgate 'dhvani yo 'sau bhagavatā kāśyapena uttaro nāma māṇavo vyākṛto bhaviṣyasi tvaṃ mānavavarṣaśatāyuṣi prajāyāṃ śākyamunirnāma tathāgato 'rhansamyaksaṃbuddha iti tasyāhaṃ śāsane pravrajitvā prajñāvatīnāmagrā bhaveyamiti||

bhagavānāha| kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yāsau tena kālena tena samayena śreṣṭhiduhitā iyaṃ kṣemā bhikṣuṇī| yattayā dānāni pradattāni tenāḍhye kule pratyājātā| yattayā dvādaśa varṣasahasrāṇi vrahmacaryavāsaḥ paripālitastenedānīmarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| iti hi bhikṣava ekāttakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāttakṛṣṇo vipāka ekāttaśuklānāmekāttaśuklo vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśrastasmāttarhi bhikṣava ekāttakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi caikāttaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīya ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam||
