buddho bhagavānsatkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrairdhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhissārthavāhairdevairnāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍaiḥ kinnarairmahoragairiti devanāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṅghaḥ śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme| tena khalu punaḥ samayena devānāṃ trayastriṃśānāmupoṣadho nāma devaputro 'sakṛdasakṛdbhagavatsakāśamupasaṃkrāmati dharmaśravaṇāya|| yāvadapareṇa samayena upoṣadho nāma devaputraḥ pañcaśataparivāro yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāttaḥ| upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvaikātte niṣaṇo dharmaśravaṇāya|| atha bhagavānupoṣadhasya devaputrasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśīṃ caturāryasatyasaṃprativedhikīṃ dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtavānyāṃ śrutvopoṣadhena devaputreṇa viṃśatiśikharasamudgataṃ satkāyadṛṣṭiśailaṃ jñānavajreṇa bhittvā srotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam|| sa dṛṣṭasatyastrirudānamudānayati| idamasmākaṃ bhadatta na mātrā kṛtaṃ na pitrā na rājñā na devatābhirneṣṭena svajanabandhuvargeṇa na pūrvapretairna śramaṇabrāhmaṇairyadbhagavatāsmākaṃ kṛtam| ucchoṣitā rudhirāśrusamudrā laṅghitā asthiparvatāḥ pihitānyapāyadvārāṇi vivṛtāni svargamokṣadvārāṇi pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ smo devamanuṣyeṣu| āha ca|

tavānubhāvātpihitaḥ sughoro hyapāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ|
apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā nirvāṇamārgaśca mayopalabdhaḥ||
tvadāśrayāccāptamapetadoṣaṃ mayādya śuddhaṃ suviśuddha cakṣuḥ|
prāptaṃ ca śāttaṃ padamāryakāttaṃ tīrṇaśca duḥkhārṇavapāramasmi||
naravarendra narāmarapūjita vigatajanmajarāmaraṇāmaya|
bhavasahasrasudurlabhadarśana saphalamadya mune tava darśanam||
avanamya tataḥ pralambahāraścaraṇau dvāvabhivandya jātaharṣaḥ|
parigamya ca dakṣiṇaṃ jitāriṃ suralokābhimukho divaṃ jagāma||

tato bhikṣavaḥ pūrvarātrāpararātraṃ jāgarikāyogamanuyuktā viharatti| tairdṛṣṭo bhagavato 'ttike udāro 'vabhāsaḥ| yaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃvignā bhagavattaṃ papracchuḥ| kiṃ bhadatta imāṃ rātriṃ bhagavattaṃ darśanāya brahmā sahāmpatiḥ śakro devendraścatvāro lokapālā upasaṃkrāttāḥ| bhagavānāha| na bhikṣavo brahmā sahāmpatirna śakro devendro nāpi catvāro lokapālā māṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāttā api tu deveṣu trayastriṃśeṣūpoṣadho nāma devaputraḥ pañcaśataparivāro māṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāttastasya mayā dharmo deśito dṛṣṭasatyaśca sa svabhavanaṃ gata iti|| bhikṣavassaṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavattaṃ papracchuḥ| kuto bhadatta upoṣadhasya devaputrasyotpattirnāmābhinirvṛttiśceti|| bhagavānāha| icchatha yūyaṃ bhikṣavaḥ śrotum|| evaṃ bhadatta|| tena hi bhikṣavaḥ śṛṇuta sādhu ca suṣṭhu ca manasi kuruta bhāṣiṣye||

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo 'tīte 'dhvani asminneva bhadrakalpe viṃśativarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāṃ kāśyapo nāma samyaksaṃbuddho loka udapādi vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān| sa vārāṇasīṃ nagarīmupaśritya viharati ṛṣipatane mṛgadāve|| yāvadapareṇa samayena kṛkī rājā bhagavattaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmati paryupāsanāya| yāvaddvau brāhmaṇau ṛṣipatanaṃ gatau kenacitkaraṇīyena| tābhyāṃ rājā dṛṣṭo mahatyā rājaṛdyā mahatā rājānubhāvena| tayo rājyābhilāṣo jātaḥ| tābhyāmanyatama upāsakaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ| bho buddhopāsaka kiṃ karma kṛtvā yaccittayati yatprārthayate tadasya sarvaṃ samṛdhyatīti|| upāsakenoktam| yaḥ pariśuddhamaṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsamupavasati yaccittayati yatprārthayate tasya sarvaṃ samṛdhyatīti|| tatastau brāhmaṇau āṣāḍhasya gṛhapatessakāśādaṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsamupoṣitau| tadaikena pariśuddho rakṣitaḥ| sa kālaṃ kṛtvā rājñaḥ kṛkeḥ putratvamabhyupaga| tasya sujāta iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam| sa pituratyayādrājye pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ||

dvitīyenopavāsaḥ khaṇḍitaḥ| sa kālaṃ kṛtvā nāgeṣūpapannaḥ| tasyopari divase taptavālukā nipatati yayā so 'sthiśeṣaḥ kriyate|| tasyaitadabhavat| kasyedaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalaṃ kasyāyaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalavipāko yenāhamīdṛśaṃ duḥkhamunabhavāmīti| sa paśyatyaṣṭāṅgasamanvāgataṃ me upavāsaṃ samādāya śikṣāśaithilyaṃ kṛtaṃ yenāhamīdṛśaṃ mahadduḥkhaṃ pratyanubhavāmi yena punaḥ samādāya rakṣitaṃ tena rājyaṃ pratilabdhamiti| tasyaitadabhavat| yannvahamidānīmapi tāvadaṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsamupavaseyamapyeva nāma nāgayonermokṣaḥ syāditi|| tato nāgavarṇamattardhāpya brāhmaṇavarṇamātmānamabhinirmāya rājñaḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāttaḥ| upasaṃkramya jayenāyuṣā ca vardhayitvovāca| aṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatena me mahārāja upavāseprayojanam| tadarhati devo 'ṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsaṃ paryeṣitum| atha na paryeṣase niyataṃ devasya saptadhā mūrdhānaṃ sphālayāmi| ityuktā tatraivāttarhitaḥ|| tato rājā bhītastrastasaṃvigra āhṛṣṭaromakūpo hiraṇyapiṭakaṃ dhvajāgre badhvā sarvavijite ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kārayāmāsa| yo me 'ṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsaṃ deśayiṣyati tasyaitaṃ hiraṇyapiṭakaṃ dāsyāmi mahatā satkāreṇa satkariṣyāmīti|| yāvadanyatamā vṛddhā strī palagaṇḍaduhitā| tayā rājñaḥ stambho darśitaḥ| atra me stambhe pitā asakṛdgandhadhūpapuṣpārcanaṃ kṛtavān tamutpāṭya pratyavekṣasveti|| tato rājñā pauruṣeyāṇāmājñā dattā ayaṃ stambha utpāṭyatāmiti| tato rājapuruṣai stambha utpāṭitaḥ| tasyādhastātsuvarṇapattrābhilikhito 'ṣṭāṅgasamanvāgata upavāso labdhaḥ sa pañca copāsakaśikṣāpadāni saptatriṃśacca bodhipakṣyā dharmāḥ|| tato rājñā tasya nāgasyāṣṭāṅgasamanvāgata upavāso likhitvā datta ṛṣipatananivāsibhiśca dvādaśabhirṛṣisahasraiḥ saptatriṃśadbodhipakṣyā dharmāḥ pratyakṣīkṛtāḥ| sa ca nāgo 'ṣṭāṅgasamanvāgatamupavāsamupoṣya sthalamudgamyotsṛṣṭakāyo 'vasthitaḥ| so 'nāhāratāṃ pratipannaḥ kālaṃ kṛtvā pañcaśataparivāraḥ praṇīteṣu deveṣu trayastriṃśeṣūpapannaḥ| ato bhikṣava upoṣadhasyotpattirnāmābhinirvṛttiśceti||
