buddho bhagavānsatkṛto gurukṛto mānitaḥ pūjito rājabhī rājamātrairdhanibhiḥ pauraiḥ śreṣṭhibhiḥ sārthavāhairdevairnāgairyakṣairasurairgaruḍaiḥ kinnarairmahoragairiti devanāgayakṣāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragābhyarcito buddho bhagavān jñāto mahāpuṇyo lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇāṃ saśrāvakasaṅgho rājagṛhamupaniśritya viharati sma veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe| athāyuṣmānnāladaḥ pūrvāhne nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhaktakṛtyaḥ paścādbhaktapiṇḍapātapratikrāttaḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratisamarpya pretacārikāṃ prakrāttaḥ||

sa gṛdhrakūṭaparvatasāmattake pretīṃ dadarśa yamarākṣasasadṛśīṃ rudhirabinducitāmasthiśakalāparivṛtāṃ śmaśānamadhya ivāvasthitāṃ rātriṃdivena pañca putrānprasūya tādṛśaṃ duḥkhamabhūya putrasnehe satyapi kṣutkṣāmatayā putrāṃstānbhakṣayattīm|| tataḥ sthaviro nāladastāṃ pṛṣṭavān| kiṃ tvayā prakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ yenaivaṃvidhaṃ duḥkhamanubhavasīti|| pretī āha| āditye hi samudrate na dīpena prayojanam| bhagavattametamarthaṃ paripṛccha sa te 'smākīnāṃ karmaplotiṃ vyākariṣyatīti yāṃ śrutvānye 'pīha sattvāḥ pāpakātkarmaṇaḥ prativiraṃsyattīti|| athāyuṣmānnālado yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāttaḥ||

tena khalu samayena bhagavānpratisaṃlayanādyutthāya catasṛṇāṃ parṣadāṃ madhuramadhuraṃ dharmaṃ deśayati kṣaudraṃ madhvivāneḍakamanekaśatā ca parṣadbhagavataḥ sakāśānmadhuramadhuraṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇotyanijyamānairindriyaiḥ| tato buddhā bhagavattaḥ pūrvālāpina ehītisvāgatavādinaḥ smitapūrvaṅgamāśca| tatra bhagavānāyuṣmattaṃ nāladamāmantrayate| ehi nālada svāgataṃ te kutastvaṃ nālada etarhyāgacchasīti|| nālada āha| āgacchāmyahaṃ bhadatta pretacārikāyāstatrāhaṃ pretīmadrākṣaṃ yamarākṣasasadṛśīṃ rudhirabinducitāmasthiśakalāparivṛtāṃ śmaśānamadhya ivāvasthitām| āha ca|

pañca putrānahaṃ rātrau divā pañca tathāparān|
bhakṣayāmi janitvā tānnāsti tṛptistathāpi me iti||
kiṃ tayā prakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ martyaloke sudāruṇam|
yena evaṃvidhaṃ duḥkhamanubhavati bhayānakamiti||

bhagavānāha| pāpakāriṇī nālada pretī icchasi tasyāḥ karmaplotiṃ śrotum|| evaṃ bhadatta|| tena hi nālada śṛṇu sādhu ca suṣṭhu ca manasi kuru bhāṣiṣye|

bhūtapūrvaṃ nāladātīte 'dhvani vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāmanyatamaḥ śreṣṭhī āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī| tena sadṛśātkulātkalatramānītam| sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayato naiva putro na duhitā| sa kare kapolaṃ kṛtvā cittāparo vyavasthitaḥ| anekadhanasamuditaṃ me gṛhaṃ na me putro duhitā| mamātyayātsarvasvāpateyamaputrakamiti kṛtvā rājavidheyaṃ bhaviṣyatīti|| so 'putraḥ putrābhinandī śivavaruṇakuberaśakrabrahmādīnanyāṃśca devatāviśeṣānāyācate sma| tadyathārāmadevatā vanadevatāścatvaradevatāḥ śṛṅgāṭakadevatā balipratigrāhi devatāḥ sahajāḥ sahadhārmikā nityānubaddhā api devatā āyācate sma|| asti caiṣa loke pravādo yadāyācanahetoḥ putrā jāyatte duhitaraśceti| tacca naivam| yadyevamabhaviṣyadekaikasya putrasahasramabhaviṣyattadyathā rājñaścakravartinaḥ| api tu trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvātputrā jāyatte duhitaraśca| katameṣāṃ trayāṇām| mātāpitarau raktau bhavataḥ saṃnipatitau mātā kalyā bhavati ṛtumatī gandharvaśca pratyupasthito bhavati| eṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvātputrā jāyatte duhitaraśca|| tasya devatārādhane 'pi sati na putro na duhitā||

tasyaivaṃ buddhirutpannā| dvitīyāṃ bhāryāmānayāmi kadācitsā sattvavatī syāditi| tena sadṛśātkulādvitīyā bhāryā ānītā| sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ kālāttareṇa āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā| tayā hṛṣṭapramuditayā svāmine niveditam| diṣṭyāryaputra vardhase āpannasattvāsmi saṃvṛttā yathā ca me dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati niyataṃ dārako bhaviṣyatīti| so 'pyāttamanāparvūkāyamatyunnamayya dakṣiṇaṃ bāhumabhiprasārya udānayatyapyevāhaṃ cirakālābhilaṣitaṃ putramukhaṃ paśyeyaṃ jāto me syānnāvajātaḥ kṛtyāni me kurvīta bhṛtaḥ pratibibhṛyāddāyādyaṃ pratipadyeta kulavaṃśo me cirasthitikaḥ syādasmākaṃ cāpyatītakālagatānāmalpaṃ prabhūtaṃ dānāni dattvā puṇyāni kṛtvā 'smākaṃ nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādekṣyate| idaṃ tayoryatratatropapannayorgacchatoranugacchatviti| āpannasattvāṃ caināṃ viditvopariprāsādatalagatāmayattritāṃ dhārayati śīte śītopakaraṇairuṣṇe uṣṇopakaraṇairvaidyaprajñaptairāhārairnātitiktairnātyamlairnātilavaṇairnātimadhurairnātikaṣāyaistiktāmlalavaṇamadhura-kaṭukakaṣāyavivarjitairāhārairhārārdhahāravirājitagātrīmapsarasamiva nandanavanavicāriṇīṃ mañcānmañcaṃ pīṭhātpīṭhamanavatarattīmadhari bhūmim| na cāsyāḥ kiñcidamanojñaśabdaśravaṇaṃ yāvadeva garbhasya paripākāya||

tatastasyāḥ pūrvikāyāḥ prajāpatyāḥ prathamapatnyāstāṃ bahumānāllaḍitāṃ dṛṣṭvā īrṣyā samutpannā cittayati ca| yadyeṣā putraṃ janayiṣyati niyataṃ māṃ bādhayiṣyati sarvathopāyasaṃvidhānaṃ kartavyamiti| kāmānkhalu pratisevamānasya nāsti kiñcitpāpaṃ karmācaraṇīyamiti| tayā 'niṣṭagatiprapātanamugdhayā visrambhamutpādya tathāvidhaṃ garbhaśātanaṃ dravyaṃ dattaṃ yena pītamātreṇaiva tasyāstapasvinyāḥ srasto garbhaḥ|| tatastayā dvitīyapatnyā sarvajñātīnsaṃnipātya prathamā patnī samanuyujyate tvayā me visrambhamutpādya śātanaṃ dravyaṃ dattaṃ yena me srasto garbha iti| tato 'sau prathamapatnī jñātimadhye śapathaṃ kartuṃ pravṛttā| yadi mayā garbhaśātanaṃ dravyamanupradattaṃ syādahaṃ pretī bhūtvā jātāñjātānputrānbhakṣayeyamiti||

kiṃ manyase nālada yāsau śreṣṭhibhāryā iyaṃ pretī| yattayā īrṣyāprakṛtayā garbhaśātanaṃ dattaṃ tena preteṣūpapannā| yattayā mṛṣāvādena śapathaḥ kṛtaḥ tasya karmaṇo vipākena rātriṃdivena pañca putrānprasūya tāneva bhakṣayati| tasmāttarhi te nālada vāgduścaritaprahāṇāya vyāyattavyaṃ yathā evaṃvidhā doṣā na syurye tasyāḥ pretyā ityevaṃ te nālada śikṣitavyam||

idamavocadbhagavānāttamanā āyuṣmānnālado 'nye ca devāsuragaruḍakinnaramahoragādayo bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan||
