Christmas

S. L. Shahani

The sun had set in,
Crimson clouds gaily trailed in heaven,
The birds were settling in nests
With a surge of gladness in their breasts.

And the crescent of new moon
Above the tree-tops did silently loom
Bearing a message of goodwill and cheer
To this world haunted by fear–

Of hunger, desolation and death,
Of savage persecution for upholding faith
In freedom, peace and progress
On the onward march of human race!

As the clouds moved on wings of breeze
A message from the Holy One they seemed to breathe:
“OYe men of this turbulent earth!
“Realize the Purpose of your birth!

“Ye are not here to sow the seeds of strife
“But to enrich with love thy fleeting life!
“Wherefore do ye wrangle and fight?
“Vain is your pride of prowess and might!”
