The Kokil

By Dulpatram-Kavi, Translated from Guzarati by G. B. Reddy

By NANALAL DULPATRAM-KAVI, M.A.

What is this? Is it a Kokil of the woods?
Yes, Yes, it is:
The harbinger and court-musician of spring:
The first coo of the dawn!
Nectar-sweet note of heaven!
The primal hum of the unfolding buds!
A song from the bower of joy!
The speech of the spring on the brink of the world!
The creator, hiding behind the physical
phenomenon,
Blows the enthusiasm of the new age into
his creation.
The soothing song of the celestial city
Comes down crawling from the summits of the skies,
Like the thrilling notes of the pleasing flute of love.
Profusely adorned is the creeper vasantika.
Its smell inundates the whole world.
Life has expressed itself in the form of the sun.
The moon of love reflected from eye to eye.
The thrill of the lake found vent in the ripples.
On the waters, danced gently the kamala and kumud.
Kokil !
Thou art imbued with power to awaken
the entire world.
O lovers of the lovely!
Why are you, yet wrapped up in the folds
of slumber and drowsiness?
