Annexure 2: Jain Prayer - Mantra

Ṇamo arihantāṇam
Ṇamo siddhāṇam
Ṇamo āyariyāṇam
Ṇamo uvajjhāyāṇam
Ṇamo loe savva-sāhuṇam
Eso pañca-namukkāro, savva-pāva-ppaṇāsaṇo; mangalāṇam ca savvesim
Padhamam havai mangalam

Meaning:

1. Ṇamo Arihantāṇam (Obeisance to the worthy souls, perfect personalities embodiedspiritually)

I bow to the arihanta-s (tīrthankara-s) who have reached enlightenment by overcoming inner weaknesses, who have attained infinite knowledge, vision, bliss, and power and have shown the path that brings the cycle of birth and death to an end.

2. Ṇamo Siddhāṇam (Obeisance to disembodied personalities)

I bow to the siddha-s or liberated souls that have attained the state of perfection and immortality by achieving freedom from all karma. They have completely ended the cycle of birth and death.

3. Ṇamo Āyariyāṇam (Obeisance to spiritual guides)

I bow to the Āchāryas, who head the Jain order, and who preach the principles of religion by showing us the path of liberation, i.e., the path of Right Conviction, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct.

4. Ṇamo Uvajjhāyaṇam (Tribute to spiritual teachers)

I bow to the Upādhyāys, who are the religious and spiritual guides of the scriptures. They teach us the true nature of the soul and karma and the importance of spiritual life over material life.

5. Ṇamo Loe Savva Sāhuṇam (Tribute topious personalities)

I bow to all saints of the world and ascetics who strictly follow the five great vows of conduct and inspire us to live a simple life.

6. Eso Pañcha Ṇamukkāro To these five types of great souls, I offer my obeisance.

7. Savva Pāvap-paṇāsaṇo May such obeisance help diminish my transgressions and sins.

8. Mangalā-ṇam cha Savvesim Giving this praise is most auspicious.

9. Padhamam Havai Mangalam It is so auspicious as to bring happiness.

(6 to 9: Namaskar to these five destroys all my sins and brings asuspicious peace and happiness in my life)
