Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.467:

तृतीयान्तं क्रियेत्येतद् विग्रहे न प्रयुज्यते ।
यथा दण्डः प्रहरणं क्रीडायामिति दृश्यते ॥ ४६७ ॥

tṛtīyāntaṃ kriyetyetad vigrahe na prayujyate |
yathā daṇḍaḥ praharaṇaṃ krīḍāyāmiti dṛśyate || 467 ||

467. In the explanatory sentence the word kriyā ending in the third case-affix is not used but in the other case, the words of daṇḍaḥ praharaṇam and krīḍāyām are seen.

Commentary

[In the explanatory sentence: brāhmaṇena tulyam adhīte kṣattriyaḥ, the word kriyayā with its third case-ending is not used. The action (adhīte), mentioned as related to the object of comparison, is understood as related to the standard of comparison also. Otherwise, the relation, namely, upamānopameyabhāva, would not result. So this is not a case of change of the third case-ending into the first case-ending in the sūtra because the third case-ending is not found in the sentence at all.

All that has happened is that the upādhi (kriyā) is mentioned somehow in the sūtra. In the sentence: daṇḍaḥ praharaṇam asyāṃ krīḍāyāṃ, on the other hand, the word praharaṇam, expressive of the upādhi, is actually used. Without it, one would not understand that the stick (daṇḍaḥ) is the implement in the game. The use of the word praharaṇam in P. 4.2.57. is, therefore, an imitation of it.]
