Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration and English translation of verse 3.14.228:
साधर्म्यमव्ययेन स्याद् बहुर्वीहेस्तथा सति ।
लिङ्गसङ्ख्यानिमित्तस्य संस्कारस्यापवर्तनात् ॥ २२८ ॥sādharmyamavyayena syād bahurvīhestathā sati |
liṅgasaṅkhyānimittasya saṃskārasyāpavartanāt || 228 ||228. A bahuvrīhi would thus be similar to an indeclinable (avyaya), being devoid of the completeness (Saṃskāra) which results from the presence of suffixes expressive of gender and number.
Commentary
[If no suffix expressive of gender and number is added to a bahuvrīhi on the ground that these two notions are already included in its meaning, it would be like an indeclinable which is also devoid of gender and number.]
