The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 2.3.51; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

विषादे श्वेतिमा प्रोक्ता धौसर्यं कालिमा क्वचित् ।
रोषे तु रक्तिमा भीत्यां कालिमा क्वापि शुक्लिमा ॥२.३.५१॥

viṣāde śvetimā proktā dhausaryaṃ kālimā kvacit |
roṣe tu raktimā bhītyāṃ kālimā kvāpi śuklimā ||2.3.51||

English translation

“It is said that the change of color from grief is white, and sometimes gray or black. Change of color from anger is red. From fear, the color change is black, and sometimes white.”
