The English translation of the Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu verse 1.1.9; a medieval era Sanskrit book, written by Rupa Goswami (fl. 15th century) which represents a devotional (bhakti) masterpiece. In this work Goswami describes the nature and different forms of pure love (rasa) as well as various other topics on Vaishnavism and devotion.

आद्या सामान्य-भक्त्य्-आढ्या द्वितीया साधनान्विता ।
भावाश्रिता तृतीया च तुर्या प्रेम-निरूपिका ॥१.१.९॥

ādyā sāmānya-bhakty-āḍhyā dvitīyā sādhanānvitā |
bhāvāśritā tṛtīyā ca turyā prema-nirūpikā
||1.1.9||

English translation

“The First Wave of the Eastern Ocean is concerned with bhakti in general. The Second Wave describes sādhana-bhakti. The Third Wave describes bhāva-bhakti. The Fourth Wave describes prema-bhakti.”
