अद्रीणां विद्रुतिः साक्षाद् आकृष्टिर् व्रज-सुभ्रुवाम् ।
स्थैर्यं स्रोत-स्वतीनां तु जीयाद् वंशी-ध्वनिर् विभोः ॥

udāharaṇam,
adrīṇāṃ vidrutiḥ sākṣād ākṛṣṭir vraja-subhruvām |
sthairyaṃ srota-svatīnāṃ tu jīyād vaṃśī-dhvanir vibhoḥ ||

adrīṇām—of mountains; vidrutiḥ—the melting; sākṣāt—directly; ākṛṣṭiḥ—the pulling; vraja-subhruvām—of the beautiful-browed women of Vraja; sthairyam—the immobility; srota-svatīnām—of rivers; tu—indeed; jīyāt—may it be supereminent; vaṃśī—of the flute; dhvaniḥ—the sound; vibhoḥ—of Vibhu.

The sound of Kṛṣṇa’s flute is supereminent. It is the melting of mountains, the magnetic pull felt by the gopīs, and the immobility of rivers.

atrādri-vidravādau hetur api vaṃśī-nādas tadādi-rūpatvenābhihitaḥ. kecid abhidhā-hetum etam ācakṣate.

Although the sound of the flute is the cause of the melting of mountains, and so on, it is expressed in terms of being those things. Some say this is the cause of its name.

Commentary:

According to the author of Kṛṣṇānandinī, the verse is spoken by Viśākhā, who speaks to a sulky Rādhā. Here the hetu ornament is an aspect of the aprastuta-praśaṃsā ornament (indirect expression): “The sound of Kṛṣṇa’s flute will melt the mountain of your pique, pull You close to Him, and stun You.”

This hetu ornament, invented by Rudraṭa,[1] is not the same as Daṇḍī’s hetu ornament. Mammaṭa, Kavikarṇapūra and others who do not acknowledge Rudraṭa’s hetu ornament sometimes use the term hetu as a synonym of the kāvya-liṅga ornament. However, Rudraṭa’s hetu follows the model of āyur ghṛtam (ghee is longevity), thus it is a striking sāropā śuddha-lakṣaṇā (Indication without gauṇī-vṛtti and with a superimposition) founded on the relation of cause and effect (2.15). There is also a superimposition, thus Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa says the hetu ornament is based on both sāropā śuddhā lakṣaṇā and sādhyavasānā śuddhā lakṣaṇā (2.16).
