58. Tad-guṇa

स्वम् उत्सृज्य गुणं योगाद् अत्युज्ज्वल-गुणस्य यत् ।
वस्तु तद् गुणताम् एति भण्यते स तु तद्-गुणः ॥ १०.१३७ ॥

svam utsṛjya guṇaṃ yogād atyujjvala-guṇasya yat |
vastu tad guṇatām eti bhaṇyate sa tu tad-guṇaḥ ||10.137||

svam—its own; utsṛjya—after giving up; guṇam—quality; yogāt—because of a connection; ati-ujjvala—very eminent; guṇasya—of a quality; yat—if (yat = yadi); vastu—a thing; tat-guṇatām—the state of being one who has that quality; eti—attains; bhaṇyate—is called; saḥ—that; tu—only; tat-guṇaḥ—the ornament called tad-guṇa (“a quality of that”).

When a thing gives up its inherent quality and acquires a very eminent quality, that is tad-guṇa (taking a quality of a nearby thing).
