8. Artha-śleṣa

श्लेषः स वाक्य एकस्मिन् यत्रानेकार्थता भवेत् ॥ १०.९६cd ॥

śleṣaḥ sa vākya ekasmin yatrānekārthatā bhavet || 10.96cd ||

When there is more than one meaning in one sentence, that is śleṣa (one literal meaning applies to two things).

ekārthānām api śabdānāṃ yady anekārtha-vācitvaṃ tadā śleṣaḥ.

If words that have only one meaning are literally expressive of more than one thing, that is śleṣa (artha-śleṣa) (9.35-36).
