अथ गुण-भेदम् आह,

atha guṇa-bhedam āha,

Now he mentions the varieties of guṇas,

mādhuryaujaḥ-prasādākhyās trayas te na punar daśa ||8.68ab||

There are three guṇas, called mādhurya (sweetness, melting), ojas (vigor), and prasāda (clarity), and not ten (8.12).

Commentary:

Bharata Muni stated ten guṇas. Bhāmaha only accepted three of them. Vāmana kept the names of Bharata muni’s guṇas and changed some definitions. Ānandavardhana followed Bhāmaha. From here to text 8.20, Mammaṭa perfects Ānandavardhana’s methodology in this regard also by repudiating Vāmana’s manner of categorizing the guṇas. The particulars of mādhurya, ojas and prasāda are mentioned afterward (8.20-26).
