Baladeva Vidyabhusana’s Sahitya-kaumudi covers all aspects of poetical theory except the topic of dramaturgy. (18) [This is an example of sahacara-bhinna (mismatch):]

स्तोत्रैस् त्रपा श्रुतैर् धैर्यं यशोभिर् अतिनम्रता |
तापस् तु मन्तुभिः सोऽयं सताम् अउत्पत्तिकः क्रमः ||

stotrais trapā śrutair dhairyaṃ yaśobhir atinamratā |
tāpas tu mantubhiḥ so'yaṃ satām autpattikaḥ kramaḥ ||

Bashfulness is accompanied with praises, steadiness with much learning, and great humility with much fame. Affliction, however, is accompanied with counsellors. For righteous persons, this is the natural course of things.

atra stotrādibhir utkṛṣṭaiḥ sahacarair mantu-tāpayor nikṛṣṭayor vairūpyāt sahacara-bhedaḥ.

A mismatch occurs here due to a lack of uniformity between the terms “affliction” and “counsellors,” which are noneminent, and the rest of the words, which are eminent.

Commentary:

This is Mammaṭa’s example of sahacara-bhinna (mismatch):

śrutena buddhir vyasanena mūrkhatā madena nārī salilena nimnagā |
niśā śaśāṅkena dhṛtiḥ samādhinā nayena cālaṅkriyate narendratā ||

“Intelligence is adorned by learning, stupidity by mishaps, a woman by passion, a riverbed by water, the night by the moon, patience by trance, and kinghood by statesmanship.”

Mammaṭa elaborates:

atra śrutādibhir utkṛṣṭaiḥ sahacaritair vyasana-mūrkhatayor nikṛṣṭayor bhinnatvam,

“A mismatch occurs here between the clause “stupidity by mishaps”, which is not resplendent, and the rest of the clauses, which are resplendent” (Kāvya-prakāśa, verse 279 vṛtti).
