विशेष-परिवृत्तो विशेषेऽविशेषः. यथा, यान्ति नील-निचोलिन्यो रजनीष्व् अभिसारिकाः. अत्र तमिस्रास्व् इति रजनी-विशेषो वाच्यः.

viśeṣa-parivṛtto viśeṣe'viśeṣaḥ. yathā, yānti nīla-nicolinyo rajanīṣv abhisārikāḥ. atra tamisrāsv iti rajanī-viśeṣo vācyaḥ.

(14) The fault called viśeṣa-parivṛtta (too general) means viśeṣe aviśeṣa (a generality when a particular instance should be stated). For example: yānti nīla-nicolinyo rajanīṣv abhisārikāḥ. “During the nights, the women, wearing dark shawls, go on a tryst.” Here a particular kind of night should have been stated: “on pitch-black nights.” (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 7.12)
